Bob Diamond has resigned with immediate effect as chief executive of Barclays, bowing to public and political pressure over the Libor rate-setting scandal.
Mr Diamond, who has also stepped down as a director at the beleaguered bank, will be replaced temporarily by Marcus Agius, Barclays’ outgoing chairman.
“The external pressure placed on Barclays has reached a level that risks damaging the franchise – I cannot let that happen,” Mr Diamond said on Tuesday.
“I am deeply disappointed that the impression created by the events announced last week about what Barclays and its people stand for could not be further from the truth.”
Mr Diamond said that he would attend Wednesday’s hearing by the Treasury select committee.
Barclays paid £290m to settle an investigation by UK and US regulators over the bank’s involvement in manipulating key interbank lending rates.
